Fushimi-Inari Shrine

The famous torii gates

Fushimi-Inari shrine is the headquarters of all Inari shrines in Japan. It is comprised of over 10,000 bright orange torii gates lined up one after the other, and is a shrine dedicated to the god of rice and sake, Inari.  Hike through the tunnel of gates up the trails into the forests of Mount Inari, and bid well-wishes to the scattering of fox statues along the way – the messengers of Inari are said to be foxes. While you are here, try the inari sushi and kitsune-udon, both of which feature fried tofu, said to be a favorite food of foxes.
