Tokushima City is the capital of Tokushima Prefecture located on the northeast coast of Shikoku Island. By far the most popular attraction of the city is the Awa Odori Festival, a dance festival that takes place in August that is regarded as one of the largest dance festivals in the world. The Awa Odori dance dates back over 400 years and some say that it started as a celebration dance when a local lord completed his castle, while others say that it is associated with the Bon Festival dance that’s practiced throughout Japan. Whatever the case, the festival now draws tremendous crowds and is also performed throughout the country. While you are in Tokushima, be sure to visit the Naruto whirlpools and take a hike up Mount Bizen to catch some pretty scenery.
