Japan’s best holiday tour is back with amazing lights, urban sights… and a little heat!
From sparkling city lights to spectacular bay views right from your hotel room (really!), the Japan Holiday Tour covers some of Japan’s most popular destinations whiel also visiting some of the most beloved festivals of the season. The adventure begins in Tokyo, where you’ll get to see (and shop) all the best spots in the city, from the bright lights of Harajuku and Shibuya to the otaku-centric streets of Akihabara and Nakano. You can choose to explore temples and neighborhoods, shop until you drop, or relax and take it all in – the pace is completely up to you!
After Tokyo, we’ll move to the main event of the tour: a five-night stay in Kobe in the city’s iconic harbor area! We’ll explore the legendary temples and shrines of Kyoto, eat our way across Osaka, and admire the spectacular beauty of our host city. The best part? We’ll also be visiting two of the best winter festivals Japan has to offer: the gorgeous lights of the Kobe Luminarie in Kobe, and for the first time ever, we’ll be attending the hot (literally) Hibuse Fire Walking Festival in Odawara. You’ll also get to ride a gondola over a waterfall, recharge in the waters of the Arima Onsen hot spring, and even go to one of Japan’s largest board gaming conventions. Worried about having time for everything? Not to worry: there are free days in both Tokyo AND Kobe, as well as optional side trips like a dinner cruise on Tokyo Bay, a visit to Tokyo Disney Sea theme park, and much more!
If you’re ready for the holiday vacation of a lifetime, this is a trip you won’t want to miss! Come discover why this has become one of PacSet’s most popular tours!

Day 2: Arrival and Ascension
We arrive! If you’re in the mood, join us for an optional visit to Tokyo Tower to kick off your time in the city!
Option: Tokyo Tower $15
Day 3: From the Forest to the Fire!
We’re covering a lot of ground today in western Tokyo. First up: a visit to the Ghibli Museum, where you’ll have the chance to see limited edition films by the famed animation studio and exhibits dedicated to all things Ghibli. Then it’s off to Nakano Broadway, the closet of anime fandom, to search for everything from anime cels to out-of-print manga and indie CDs. After the shopping stop, we’ll board an express train to Odawara, where we’ll hang with the local festival goers before we watch some very brave monks walk through the fires of the Akibayama Hibuse Festival!
Day 4: Travel Among Fans
We start our day with a quiet cultural stop at the majestic Ikegami Honmonji Temple. Take pictures, admire the five-story pagoda, or buy some charms for good fortune. Once we’ve finished our visit, it’s off to the otaku mecca of Akihabara. Shop for rare doujinshi, flip virtual tables in giant video arcades, and see the latest in electronic gadgetry. Feeling adventurous? A visit to the Maid Cafe is a good way to experience Japan’s idol culture (and consume a sundae that looks like an animal XD).
Option: Maid Cafe $45
Day 5: It Happens in Harajuku
In the morning we’ll begin in Harajuku, where we’ll take in a little culture at Meiji Jingu Shrine before joining the shoppers and fashion mavens of Takeshita Street. Visit the famous Kiddy Land Toy Shop, check out what’s next in trends at Laforet and the Design Festa Gallery, or just kick back and consume some delicious crepes. From there, you can choose to walk or ride to Shibuya, where we’ll check out some cool local cafes, shop for special holiday merchandise, and explore the streets that inspired the Square Enix game “The World Ends with You.” In the evening, you can relax or join us for a tempura and hot pot dinner on a Yakatabune longboat in Tokyo Bay!
Options: Yakatabune Dinner $100
Day 6: Roll the Dice, Follow the Mouse
It’s a free day! Take time to explore the areas you missed, go back to places where you didn’t have enough time, or just relax. Your guide will be on hand to help you get where you need to go. In the mood for something new? You can choose to visit Tokyo Disney Sea, the Japan-exclusive Disney theme park on Tokyo Bay, or join your guides for a trip to a board game convention to see what’s new in the world of games! We’ll also swing by Yokohama to check out the holiday lights there. :)
Options: Tokyo Disney Sea $85
Day 7: Welcome to Kobe!
Today, we’ll board the Shinkansen “bullet train” to our main stop: the historic trading port of Kobe! After we drop our bags at the hotel, we’ll spend the afternoon exploring the city’s Sannomiya shopping arcade – which also includes one of Western Japan’s biggest centers for anime and manga goods. Then, take a break to explore the city’s iconic waterfront with us after a bit of shopping. In the evening, we’ll gather to walk under the thousands of lights in Kobe’s holiday light display (and memorial to victims of the 1995 earthquake here), the Kobe Luminarie! Sip Cocoa, snap pictures, and listen to the carillon bells as we experience the majesty of one of the most acclaimed festivals PacSet features.
Day 8: Castle Crashing
We begin our day with a little history in the city of Osaka as we cross moats and park lands to reach the foot of Osaka Castle. After checking out the castle, we’ll venture to Shinsaibashi and Namba, the wild cultural center of Osaka that is home to countless game centers, neon light displays, and some of the best local cuisine that Japan has to offer. After getting back to Kobe, we’ll visit the waterfront and the memorials there before dinnertime. After that, you have a choice: turn in early, or take another stroll through the Luminarie!
Day 9: The Kyoto Experience
If you’re looking to get an up-close and personal peek into Japan’s past, there’s no better place to do it than Kyoto! We’ll spend the whole day here, visiting the city’s scenic Kiyomizu Temple before going across town to see the shogunate’s old digs, Nijo Castle. After walking along the nightingale flooring in the castle, we’ll take a trip to the Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji. On our way home, we’ll have a pit stop at Kyoto’s massive Kyoto Station Complex to have dinner and see the annual holiday lights display in the station center.
Day 10: The Onsen Awaits You!
All this traveling can make one tired, so we’ll begin this day with a trip up the mountainside to Kansai’s most legendary hot spring resort, Arima Onsen. That afternoon, we’ll hang out on the outskirts of Kobe and take a ropeway car over a waterfall to the scenic Kobe Nunobiki Herb Garden, where you’ll be treated to one of the finest views of the bay the area has to offer. Explore the gardens, or just relax and take it in – the choice is yours! In the evening, your guides will be arranging a trip to a local spot for some of the city’s famous steak, so if your wallet allows, join the party!
Day 11: Freedom!
Today is a free day! Go check out the Luminarie again, check out Himeji Castle or Nara, or just relax on the balcony of your hotel room – it’s up to you!
Day 12: Departure
It’s off to the airport and back to the USA to tell your friends all about your adventures!
