Experience a completely different side of Japan’s most popular regions!
Built with the feedback of our alumni, Kanto to Kansai 2017 has everything you would expect from a Tokyo and Kyoto tour: Osaka’s amazing cuisine, Tokyo’s anime goods and awe-inspiring architecture, and Kyoto’s towering temples. The twist? We’ll also be seeing some off-the-beaten-path spots that locals (and our guests) give rave reviews but most other tours miss!
What kind of spots you ask? Well, have you ever spent a night at a temple before rising to hang with the monks? Have you ever had the chance to make your own soba noodles with some of Tokyo’s friendliest chefs? Have you ever explored hidden Tokyo neighborhoods, or hidden mountain passages from the windows of a gondola? Have you ever had the chance to cycle one of the world’s most picturesque land bridges across a bay before shredding the waves back across on a speedboat? On Kanto to Kansai, you’ll be able to do that and more – all at a pace that encourages exploration and relaxation in equal doses.
Don’t settle for the Tokyo and Kyoto everyone else sees! Sign up today and we guarantee you’ll go home with some truly amazing tales to tell!

Day 1: Departure
We depart from Los Angeles for Kansai Airport!
Day 2: Ushered Into Umeda
Arrive in Japan and settle into your hotel room to catch up on sleep! If you can’t sleep, that’s cool – join your guide for a quick side trip to Osaka’s hip Umeda neighborhood!
Day 3: From the Mountaintops
We’ll come back to the city later, but for the beginning of our journey, we’re heading into the misty mountains south of Osaka. An incline railway will take us to the holy site of Mt. Koya, where we’ll wander through bamboo forests to the Okunoin Masoleum, dedicated to legendary monk Kobo Daishi. After wandering through the breathtaking scenery, we make our way to our own temple, where we’ll have a special meal prepared by our hosts and experience an overnight at the temple!
Day 4: City Lights and Tasty Bites
After rising for morning meditation with the monks, we’ll descend back into Osaka and make our way to Namba! Check out the neon signs, amazing food and endless arcades to explore as we re-adjust to urban Japan. From there, we’ll head west to Kobe and the Sannomiya neighborhood. Shop the hidden Otaku Road, sample tasty local cuisine, or do a little of both!
Day 5: Conquering the Castle
Overlooking Japan’s largest lake, Hikone Castle is our stop for today. We’ll climb up to the keep, check out the old gardens, and swing through the old merchant quarter for lunch. Then it’s back to Kyoto, where we’ll explore the shrine gate tunnels of the fox-themed Fushimi Inari shrine before turning in for the night.
Day 6: Arrival to Akihabara
After storing our larger bags at the hotel, we bid farewell to Osaka and head to Tokyo for a day in Akihabara! Shop for the latest and greatest in anime merchandise, take on locals in 2P battles in giant video arcades, enjoy some of Tokyo’s best ramen, and more! If you’re shopped out, no worries – your guide will be on hand to show you around the famous Kanda Shrine!
Day 7: Do as the Tokyoites Do
We begin the day at Ikegami Honmonji Temple, where we’ll swing by the area’s famous temple, get a little breakfast, and explore the picturesque neighborhood. For lunch, we’ll be exploring the up-and-coming neighborhood of Jiyugaoka, where brick-lined streets will lead you to some of Tokyo’s best undiscovered restaurants and cutest boutiques. Speaking of cute, we’ll end our day at the Ghibli Museum, where an amazing collection of exhibits dedicated to the famous animation studio, Hayao Miyazaki, and the art of animation will both impress and inspire.
Day 8: Gardens and Soba
Some of Tokyo’s largest skyscrapers hide one of the city’s finest gardens, Hamarikyu, and that’s our first stop today! Sip some tea, snap pics of bridges and streams, and get lost among the urban greenery. The next stop for us is the Sumida River – by boat! – as we sail from the gardens up to the famous “lightning gate” in Asakusa. From there, we’re hoping you’re ready for a little work: we’re going to be learning how to make our own soba noodles! After eating our creations, we’ll head back to the hotel to relax (or head out to explore a bit more).
Day 9: FLEX FREE DAY!
Today is a special flex-free day! We move back to Osaka today, but the day is yours to see more of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, or anywhere in between! Your guide will work with you to make your travel plans.
Day 10: Mountain Winds and Winding Roads
Welcome back to Kansai! Our first stop: the famous bamboo groves of Arashiyama! We’ll sneak through the forests, walk the banks of the river, and explore the area shrines before a break for lunch and a little shopping. Then we’ll board an express train to take us north to Amanohashidate! Here, we’ll check in to our hotel and relax in the hot springs before a huge dinner and an evening of relaxation.
Day 11: The Waves of Amanohashidate
Our previous participants loved Amanohashidate so much, they asked us to double the time we spend there – and so we did! You’ll explore this breathtaking land bridge any way you like today; may we suggest you join your guide for a scenic cycle ride? Once we’re across, we’ll check out the picturesque shrines of the area before we speed boat our way back across. Take a break for a little lunch before we head up a nearby mountain for a better view of the area. In the evening, we’ll relax at our local hot spring hotel and have an Onsen Party to cap the journey!
Day 12: Return home
Return home to tell your friends how much fun you had!
